Within Clifty Canyon Nature Preserve the waterfalls change moods with the weather and the seasons our short water shed accounts for rapid changes in the amounts of water coming to our four falls that can range from roaring plunges, delicate bridal-veil mists or gleaming frozen titans. Winter and spring visits reveal them at their best. The rugged splendor of Clifty Canyon offers exciting year-round hiking and scenery. Just be sure to stay on the marked trails for the safest visit and as always in all state parks "take only pictures and leave only footprints!" Our historic Nature Center was once a saddle barn and is still a bridge and as such, it fittingly maintains our link with the past, when the CCC workers built it and so many of our parks structures. Clifty Inn and the Falls Restaurant in addition to the facilities many guest services also offers a breath taking view of Historical downtown Madison and the Ohio River while the hills of Kentucky form the backdrop for this southern vista. Native forest and large rock outcrops line the upper part of Big Raccoon Creek. Cecil M. Harden Lake resulted from the damming of the creek for flood control. The lake also provides recreation, wildlife management and economic benefits. A variety of fish, flora and fauna can be viewed at the property. Nearby Historic Mansfield Roller Mill is a preserved, working example of industrialization in Indiana at the turn of the 20th century. This 1880s flour mill uses machinery from that time to show visitors how flour and cornmeal were processed from wheat and corn. It is an almost complete and unchanged example of flour mills from this time period. Come visit west central Indiana Summit Lake is well-known for its good fishing, its restored prairie fields and the large variety of birds. Anglers find good fishing for largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill, walleye, and channel catfish some that exceed 10 pounds. The good water quality and the scenic vistas add to the angler's experience. There are approximately 200 acres of restored prairie fields, some that are filled with flowers that peak in June and July each year. The birding opportunities are special. More than 250 species of birds have been spotted here because of the variety of habitats. Hikers will enjoy the four trails that border the lake as well as wind through the prairies, woodlands and wetlands. Our campground is all Class A with some sites located on the lake.
